My Lady Jane Is Here to Fill the Bridgerton-Size Hole in Your Heart

[ad_1]

After watching My Lady Jane on Amazon Prime Video, I’m just going to say it: This show may even be better than Bridgerton.

I know, I know, it’s a big claim. After all, the shows are not quite the same. The Amazon Prime Video series is a Tudor dramedy, a free retelling and reimagining of the story of Lady Jane Grey, who sat on the throne of England for only nine short days before she was executed.

But the Bridgerton vibes cannot be denied: love, intrigue, fancy dresses, queens, weddings, and lots of sex. And now that we’ve binged the entire Netflix series, we need more fodder. So this one comes at just the right time.

In eight episodes, the series, which was released on June 27,tells the story of Lady Jane Grey in a new way. Grey was the great-niece of Henry VIII and the cousin of Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. All the cousins also play important roles and in some cases resemble their real-life counterparts.

But My Lady Jane poses the question: What if Jane Grey had not died? Some historical events and facts have been retained, others completely invented. Like Bridgerton, this series is also based on a series of books with the same name by authors Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows.

My Lady Jane begins like many historical dramas: A woman does not want to marry but must take a rich son of Lord Somebody as her husband to protect her family. Jane Grey (Emily Bader) is a young woman who has no desire to ever marry. But after her father dies and all her estates are to go to a distant relative, her mother, Lady Frances Grey (Anna Chancellor), arranges a marriage to Lord Guildford Dudley (the actor’s name here would be a spoiler).

But Jane has no intention of getting married: She seeks help from her former best friend, the current King Edward IV (Jordan Peters). However, he has already agreed to the marriage—and has other problems. He is seriously ill and it is assumed that he has only a short time to live. Is this a conspiracy? And who will take the throne when he dies? His sister Mary? Or is it Lady Jane Grey?

And then there’s stupid love—I mean lust—that comes into play. The handsome stranger from the bar, whom Jane can’t stand at all, but who is unfortunately far too charming.
