Angelina Jolie often turns to her tried-and-tested wardrobe staples: usually a trench coat paired with a black maxi dress, or luxurious greige knits. When it comes to evening wear, she doesn’t stray too far from this neutral color palette, often opting for an LBD or a flowing white gown.
It was the latter option that Jolie chose for the New York premiere of Maria, the Pablo LarraÃn-directed biopic about the Greek opera singer Maria Callas. The actor wore a draped white dress by French couturier Madame Grès, dating back to the ’50s, sourced from Amal Clooney’s go-to vintage dealer, Mon Vintage. “Angelina is truly the ultimate Mon Vintage muse,” founder Marie Blanchet told Vogue. “She’s a true Hollywood star in the 1940s and ’50s sense—she picked the gown from our Paris showroom herself, making it all feel very personal.”
It’s not the first time that Jolie, who launched her own fashion brand last year, has turned to the archives of late. For a state dinner at the White House in 2023, she opted for another flowing white dress, this time from Chanel, which she paired with a vintage blazer, also by the French fashion house.
Meanwhile, Jolie’s own back catalogue is proving to be style inspiration for others. For this year’s Vanity Fair Oscars party, Sydney Sweeney wore the same plunging white gown by Marc Bouwer that Angelina Jolie wore to the Oscars back in 2004.
It just goes to show that an excellent white dress will always be a timeless classic—and not just for brides, either.
