In order to choose a body wash formulated for your skin type and concerns, you’ll want to keep an eye on the ingredient list.
If you have dry skin, the best cleanser for you will be pH balanced and rich in ceramides and moisturizers, as this helps to repair the skin barrier rather than strip it, says Blair Murphy-Rose, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in NYC. The same goes for mature skin, though Brendan Camp, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in NYC, also suggests ingredients that encourage cell turnover and improve the appearance of fine lines, such as lactic and—for those with mature skin— glycolic acid.
Oily and acne-prone skin, on the other hand, can benefit from ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide for clearing clogged pores from impurities, minimizing breakouts, and calming redness (looking at you, body acne). “Salicylic acid removes excess oil and prevents blocked pores, and benzoyl peroxide has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties,” says Dr. Camp.
Finally, if you have sensitive skin, it’s best to avoid any additives that could result in irritation. “Choose a cleanser that is hypoallergenic and fragrance-free that will replenish the skin barrier with a low risk of irritation if you have sensitive skin,” Dr. Murphy-Rose says. ”Sensitive skin types should also look for gentle body washes that incorporate moisturizers and are pH balanced, and, when possible, it may be best to avoid sulfates, parabens, PEGs, and phthalates.”
