Sturdy Earthquake Strikes Turkey-Iran Border

DUBAI (Reuters) -An earthquake with a magnitude of as much as 5.9 struck the Turkey-Iran border area on Saturday, destroying homes in a principal provincial metropolis in Iran, Iranian media and the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.

"The quantity of destruction of some homes and buildings within the metropolis of Khoy metropolis is comparatively excessive," Iranian emergency companies spokesperson Mojtaba Khaledi informed the YJC information company.

The quake had a magnitude of 5.6 and was at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), EMSC mentioned. Iranian media mentioned the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.9 and hit close to town of Khoy in Iran's Western Azerbaijan province.

Iranian emergency officers mentioned rescue groups had been despatched to the world and hospitals had been placed on alert, state media mentioned.

An emergency official informed state TV that it was snowing in a few of the areas affected by the quake amid freezing temperatures and that there have been some energy cuts.
