NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Gun violence continues to surge in New York City.
On Monday alone, seven people were shot in three shootings citywide.
The Bronx is seeing a growing number of gang-related crimes involving teenagers. Over the weekend, two teens were killed within a mile of each other.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea addressed the tragic trend in an interview Tuesday.
“You have a 16-year-old kid arrested three times in 90 days with guns,” he said. “Why would this kid be put back onto the street over and over and over without meaningful help? So is it COVID? Is it incompetence? What is the plan here? Where is the mentorship?”
Local organizations have been trying to do their part to help. Rehabilitated gang members work with people from similar backgrounds to try and diffuse gang conflict in a non-violent way.
